User / Darvin Atkeson / Yosemite National Park - Sunset on Half Dome Storm

The sunsets on Half Dome as a storm blows though. It was one of those days
when the overcast sky makes for a dull dismal day in the park. Perfect for
us photographers and lousy for the tourist. Originally this image sat till
today when I was playing around with HDR images. This is not the result of
an HDR image but it did give me the idea to double process the RAW file to
bring out some of the dark area and enhance the color of the storm clouds a
bit. The detail in the clouds was there but was somewhat blown out by the
setting of the camera. Likewise the lower right of the image was too dark.
A place where I should have taken multiple exposures to compensate for the
wide range of color. This is the result of a bit of work in Photoshop to
bring out some of that detail.

The image was taken just a ways down from Glacier Point along 4 mile trail
which leads down to the valley floor. It was late and the bus service had
stopped running so we did not continue down much further. I understand
there are equally stunning views of Yosemite Falls from the trail so I do
plan to revisit the trail in the near future. This was taken with my Nikon
D200 before I purchased some of the higher end lenses. The glass really
does make a difference as it reduces the amount of post processing you have
to do.
