The eruption at Sundhnúksgígar in Iceland, seen from 50 km away, near the church Innri-Hólmskirkja. The photo is taken on 27 March, on the 11th day of the eruption. It is hard to get close to the eruption, as access is blocked and it is seen as hazardous, very close to the Blue Lagoon geothermal baths and the abandoned town of Grindavík. This is the fourth eruption in as many months north of Grindavík, and the biggest one yet, in terms of volume of lava and longevity. The plume contains very little ash, but sulphuric gases, that can be hazardous close to the volcano. This eruption is the 7th in a row on the Reykjanes peninsula in 3 years, but the area had been dormant for 800 years prior to that. The first 3 eruptions were small, long-lived (especially the first, for 6 months) and harmless, while the recent ones have been big, short and damaging, especially for Grindavík, where 3 houses went under lava and dangerous fissures abound.
