While I was in search for spring images in the southeastern corner of Utah I got a whiteout.
When life gives you lemons, make lemonade!

Uncovering the ephemeral elusiveness of a landscape is one of the most difficult elements in wilderness photography. It requires a high level of anticipation of what the light might unravel several hours, days, weeks or months later. I have a mental map of many areas in the Southwest based on this principle of ephemeral elusiveness.

This area is fairly well visited. Many people go there for a very specific attraction and get locked in by it. Bad tunnel vision! I do not exclude myself!

Winter 2022/23 I visited the area, for the umpteenth time, with someone who jumped onto the main attraction while I just wandered around and looked. All of the sudden I was struck by a complete new composition, but the light was not right. It took three trips back to finally get close to what I envisioned 13 months ago.

A little, intimate ancient pueblo ruin which stopped me in my tracks. I got here on a day after a snow storm has blanketed the landscape. The road was covered by some untouched deep snow and the hike was only possible with my snowshoes and gaiters.

The beauty of this place was so overwhelming to me that I stayed there, despite the cold weather for 5 1/2 hours to make sure that the sun was in the right position for the image. The feelings that overcame me by staying there and absorbing the nature, the silence and the location for all these hours is something that I was not able to photograph.

There are two spots left on my Namibia Photo Tour February 2024. Join ‘last minute’ and safe big on a great adventure!

The ghost town of Kolmanskop is famous for decay and the desert reclaiming the space for itself. The houses are filing up with sand and leave behind nice dunes. Unfortunately the huge popularity of the place doesn’t allow the sand to keep the wind induced patterns and ripples to stay for long. People walk everywhere. Finding untouched ground is difficult and challenging.

Some technical details about this image: The camera and I were crammed against a wall in my back. I barely could see the LCD screen on the digital back. The lens of the camera was shifted up and down to take the upper and the lower portion of the scene. Each portion ended up with 22 stacked images to ensure sharpness throughout the entire scene. After the stacking, the upper and the lower images were stitched.

The view of Padre Bay with Padres Butte in my back and looking towards Dominguez, Dinosaur, Boundary and Tower Buttes with several mesas in the left background has something of grandeur. The difficulty lays in the timing of light and the rush to the boat to drive back in the dawn to the houseboat. You don’t want to be caught in the darkness while driving the motorboat.
Image created during my last Lake Powell Workshop, Oct 2023.
Panorama crafted with three images, middle + shift to the left and shift to the right.
