Most people don't know there is a good restaurant with a great view sitting in the middle of LAX airport. It is called Encounters and is like going on a set for the Jetsons. This is actually two shots stitched together. Added to the Cream of the Crop pool as Most Favorites.

Aside from the interesting subject matter and composition, the real challenge of this shot was the extreme geometry and wide lighting conditions. Shot with the 12-24mm lens @ 12mm, I had to make heavy use of the Lens Correction module in PS3 to correct converging lines in the temple posts and then added a curves adjustment layer to bring down the sky and open up the shadows. I also used nik Color Efex 2.0 Brilliance/Warmth filter (I am starting to use this one on almost all my images, at the 60% slider strength) and then also added blended Photomatix and Lucis layers.

This is the lighthouse guarding the harbor near Victoria, B.C., Canada. Strictly ceremonial these days it is lovingly preserved. Very little processing was done to this image other than running it through DxO. I did blend in a layer treated with Photomatix but only in the foreground to bump up the colors a bit, using a partially painted layer mask. Shot with the Nikon 18-200mm VR at 18mm with a warm polarizing filter and a Singh Ray enhancing filter. Shooting this wide and at an up angle created some real distortion problems. Spent an hour or so using the Lens Correction module in Photoshop to try to get the houses to have somewhat vertical lines and keep the lighthouse from looking like it was going to fall over. Wasn't 100% successful but the red outbuilding really does have walls that slope out to the ground.

Rocky Point is about five miles south of Carmel on Highway 1 heading towards Big Sur and is also the site of a restaurant better known for its spectacular views than for its food. This was actually shot on Christmas Day 2006 at sunset, looking south towards the Bixby Bridge. Just happened to catch the lighting break...it was cloudy most of the day and the sun just peeked through right before setting, providing what photographers have come to know as "golden light".

Incidentally, this is NOT an HDR. Just a well-exposed single RAW file, processed using DxO (which is an absolutely amazing program for RAW shooters).

I did treat the capture with a slight blend of the LucisArt plugin filter and I also blended a tonemapped layer to punch up the colors a bit.

Shot with a Nikkor 18-200mm VR mounted on a Nikon D200 at the 18mm focal length. Despite some naysayers, I LOVE this lens. It is sharp and the ability to frame and try out a lot of different compositions in seconds is creatively liberating. I literally have my choice of Nikkor lenses and this one winds up taking the winning picture more often than not.
