Just outside the city of Albuquerque lies a hidden treasure that is likely overlooked by many visitors (including us). But a short 1.5 mile unpaved trail at Piedras Marcadas Canyon introduces visitors to a wealth of Native history with over 300 petroglyphs.

Petroglyph National Monument protects a variety of cultural and natural resources including volcanoes, archeological sites and an estimated 24,000 carved images. Many of the images are recognizable as animals, people, brands and crosses; others are more complex. These images are inseparable from the cultural landscape, the spirits of the people who created and who appreciate them.

Have a great Tuesday....and as always, thanks for stopping by to visit :-)

Petroglyphs (also called rock engravings) are pictogram and logogram images created by removing part of a rock surface by incising, picking, carving, and abrading. The images left behind on the rocks at Petroglyph National Monument tell the stories of those people who visited long ago. American Indian and Spanish explorers were common visitors to the mesa and Rio Grande Valley. (source: nps.gov)

If you're ever visiting the Albuquerque area, I would highly recommend making a visit to this monument...it's well worth the short hike to see some of the more than 24,000 carved images located in the area.

Have a great Friday....thanks for all your visits & comments!!!!!
