Five for Friday.....

#4 - I knew when we decided to take a trip & hike the parks in the southwest that I would have to deal with lizards, tarantula's, and possibly rattlesnakes. Saw plenty of lizards; fortunately no snakes; and was fortunate enough to see this guy from a safe distance at one of the stops in Zion National Park. Although it is my understanding that tarantula's are harmless, they are a bit large, furry, creepy, and crawly for my taste :-)

Explored October 9, 2009 - #299

Simple shot taken on the eastern side of Zion National Park as dusk approached. Perhaps one of the most fascinating parks that we visited on our two week trek because of the wide variation in landscape. The eastern side is a whirlwind of lines, swirls, & amazing rock formations while the western side is much more mountainous. Each section unique & stunning in its own way.

Five for Friday....

#2 - Ran into this collared lizard along a trail leading to the Lower Emerald Pools in Zion National Park. Actually, I spotted over a dozen lizards along the way, but this one really stood out because he was much larger and more colorful than the rest. He was also quite obstinate and did not want to move out of the way but eventually did so I could pass (just a little squeamish when it comes to creepy, crawly things).

Zion National Park....Continuous water "weeps" out of Weeping Wall resulting in a lush over hanging eco system. The weeping is from a slot canyon above known as Echo Canyon. Impermeable shale makes up the floor of Echo Canyon preventing the ground from absorbing the water and forces it to penetrate the wall, thus weeping through the rock.

Zion National Park....

#4 of 4: Stratigraphy is the study of rock layers and nowhere is this more apparent than in Zion National Park....the layers reveal the relative age of the rocks which were formed in environments as varied as sand dunes and shallow sea bottoms. Starting at the bottom and working your way to the top, a stratigrapher will encounter layers of Moenkopi Formation, Shinarump Conglomerate, Chinle Formation shales, Lower Moenave deposits, Kayenta mudstone, and Navajo Sandstone.
