Chaco Culture National Historical Park is a United States National Historical Park hosting the densest and most exceptional concentration of pueblos in the American Southwest. The park is located in northwestern New Mexico, between Albuquerque and Farmington, in a remote canyon cut by the Chaco Wash. Containing the most sweeping collection of ancient ruins north of Mexico, the park preserves one of the United States' most fascinating cultural and historic areas.

Five for Friday....

#5 - Having just finished our self-guided tour of Chaco Canyon, we were preparing to leave the park when we spotted this bull elk and two females. I was surprised to see any elk in the area, as it did not appear to be their type of terrain, but apparently there is a small herd of elk that still roam the area and occasionally make themselves visible to visitors.

#3 of 5: Chaco Canyon National Monument, northwest New Mexico.....

As we were preparing to leave the park, the sun was beginning to set, and off in the distance, a summer storm was brewing. The combination of both really accentuated the clouds and evening sky....loved the colors!!!

As always, thanks for all the wonderful comments & invites!!!

Chaco Culture National Historical Park....From AD 850 to 1250, Chaco was a hub of ceremony, trade, and administration for the prehistoric Four Corners area--unlike anything before or since. Chaco is remarkable for its multi-storied public buildings, ceremonial buildings, and distinctive architecture. These structures required considerable planning, designing, organizing of labor, and engineering to construct. The Chacoan people combined many elements: pre-planned architectural designs, astronomical alignments, geometry, landscaping, and engineering to create an ancient urban center of spectacular public architecture--one that still awes and inspires us a thousand years later.
