She has lived in New Orleans since 2010, and was performing with other musicians from that city. Since that move her music has explored her Haitian heritage. Mélissa Laveaux'sparents were Haitians who left the country in the 1960s. She was born in Montreal and grew up in Ottowa. Laveaux moved to France just over a decade ago. She had already released three albums (described as indie folk/rock) before in 2016 visiting Haiti (for the first time since she was 12), and discovered the political songs of the period of the American Occupation of 1914-1935. These feature on her latest album "Radyo Siwèl", and were here given a strong rock treatment by her band. This included Elise Blanchard who I photographed with Oumou Sangaré earlier in 2018 (www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/albums/72157664635385077/).
