7th August (evening) 2018 at Ham Marquee, Sidmouth (supporting Karine Polwart).

Sidmouth Folk Week.

Country: Canada. Style: Contemporary & Traditional American Folk.

Lineup: Kaia Kater (v/bjo). Andrew Ryan (b/v).

In her mid 20s Kaia Kater was born in Montreal (to a father from Grenada), was raised there and in Wakefield, Ottowa, and now lives in Toronto. When at school she discovered the banjo at a bluegrass festival (her mother was involved in promoting Folk Music), and switched to Old Time learning clawhammer style. She attended Davis & Elkins College in Elkins, West Virginia to study Appalachian music (gaining a scholarship to be part of the College String Band). While at College Kater began to develop into a singer-songwriter. Here she mostly played her own songs with three traditional one "Signs and Wonders" (or "When this World comes to an End") from the repertoire of the Hammons family of Pocahontas County, West Virginia, "Little Pink" and "Trouble in Mind".
In this photo: Kater plays a Gold Tone OT-800 Tubaphone banjo.
