7th November 2018 at St James’s Piccadilly, London W1.

Yunus Emre Enstitüsü promotion.

Country: Turkey. Style: Ottoman & Turkish Musici.

Lineup: Dilek Türkan (v), Derya Türkan (kemenche), Murat Salim Tokaç (tambur), Atilla Akintürk (qanun), Fahrettin Yarkin (daire).

I have attended several concerts at the Yunus Emre Enstitüsü. For this one they moved to a larger venue. The group were on their way to Dublin for an event to celebrate the opening of an Yunus Emre Enstitüsü office there. The evening began with Ottoman music performed by the duo of Derya Türkan and Murat Salim Tokaç. They were then joined by the other musicians for more recent compositions. In the past husband and wife Derya and Dilek Türkan were both in the part of the band Incesaz (Derya one of the founders). Derya has also performed with the leading Turkish classical musicians such as Kudsi Erguner and Ihsan Özgen, and collaborated internationally with Hesperion XXI, Djivan Gasparyan, Sokratis Sinopoulos and Renaud Garcia Fons. Dilek has performed as a featured soloist and toured around Europe with Kudsi Erguner's İstanbul Hanımları (Women of Istanbul). Most recently Derya Türkan, Murat Salim Tokaç and Fahrettin Yarkin are also members of the group İstanbul Solistleri (Istanbul Soloists). It was under this name that these musicians appeared in Dublin.
