This duo has toured together under the name "Appalachian Roots" for a number of years. Riley Baugus' family is from Allegheny County in the north central part of North Carolina (and he lives in Walkertown in the north east). An instrument maker as well as a musician, he has also regularly collaborated with Kirk Sutphin and Dirk Powell. Ira Bernstein grew up on Long Island, NY. He dances in a variety of styles (specializing in Appalachian flatfooting), and has been a member of many dance groups including the Fiddle Puppets and his own Ten Toe Percussion Ensemble. He has won dance competitions at several Fiddler's Convention including Mount Airy and Galax. Around 2011 he had to retire from competitions with a diagnosis of Parkinson's. Here once warmed up he produced glimpses of what he was once capable of. Baugus is a notable raconteur and between songs and tunes told stories about people he knew (such as Tommy Jarrell, Doc Watson and Matokie Slaughter) before performing music associated with them.
