Lineup: 6 musicians (left to right): 1 x yunluo/xiaoha. 1 x sheng/danzi/nao, 1 x guanzi/muyu/qing, 1 x sheng/bo, 1 x dizi/yinging. 1 x dagu.

The Zhihua Temple (or Temple of Attained Wisdom) in Old City area of Beijing was first built in the Ming Dynasty (1444 AD) and is one of the most important original building complexes from the period. Monastic life ceased in the 1950s, but the Temple been since been restored and a group of musicians (downsized from nine to six) have been taught the litergy from hand-copied notation books dating from 1694, with the help of surviving former monks. They play daily at the Temple. Here the performance began with a vocal liturgy accompanied only by Bo and Nao (cymbals with larger and smaller boss). This was followed by a one performed with wind instruments: Sheng (free reed instrument), Guanzi (double reed instrument), Dizi (tranverse flute) accompanied by Yunlou (set of gongs on a frame), Dagu (large drum). Finally one with percussion instruments: Muyu (woodblock), Qing (bronze bowl), Xiaocha (small cymbals), Danzi (gong in a frame), Yinqing (small upturned bowl-shaped bell on a stick), Dagu.
