24th February 2018 at the Calthorpe Arms, London WC1.

Cellar Upstairs Folk Club, www.cellarupstairs.org.uk/.

Country: Britain. Style: Traditional English Folk.

Lineup: Belinda Kempster (v), Fran Foote (v/shruti box).

Fran Foote is part of Stick in the Wheel (unfortunately the one time I have seen them live she was missing from the lineup). From Basildon, she was introduced to music by her parents Belinda and John Kempster (who met in The Hoy and Helmet folk club in Benfleet in the early 1970s). Belinda leant some of her songs from her uncle Ernest Austin. A farm labourer and later agricultural engineer, Ernest recorded a couple of songs aged 83 for Topic Records in 1973 (origiinally released the next year on an LP 'Flash Company", since released in the "Voice of the People" series). Mother and daughter only sang together in public for the first time at the Café Oto in March last year. They mostly performed songs learnt from Ernest, plus other traditional ones.
