22nd July 2017 at Woodberry Wetlands, London N16.

“Campfire Club”, organised by the Nest Collective, thenestcollective.co.uk/.

Country: Colombia. Style: Afro-Colombian Music / Folclór Timbiquireño.

Lineup: Nidia Sofía Góngora (v), Yuli Magali Castro (v/guasá), Targelia Sinistrerra (v/guasá), Maria Celia Zúñiga (v/guasá), Alexis Montaño (marimba), Lisandro Vallecilla (bombo macho), Danilo Cuenú (bombo hembra), Duván Díaz (cununos).

The female members of the group met in school in Timbiquí on the Pacific coast where their music teacher taught them the traditional folk songs typical of the region, sung for generations by the women while washing clothes in the river and praising their patron saints. Nidia Góngora was first brought to Europe by the producer Quantic, and I saw them together in 2012 as part of Ondatrópica at the River of Music Festival, see: www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157630983740926/. This was a rainy evening, but fortunately most of the performance was able to take place outside round the campfire.
