7th December 2017 at Royal Festival Hall (Clore Ballroom), London SE1.

Part of Nordic Matters / 100 Years of Finnish Independence concert (free event).

Country: Finland. Style: Traditional Finnish.

Lineup: Emilia Lajunen (fiddle/nyckelharpa/v), Eero Grundström (harmonium/harmonica/v).

This was a post-concert performance following a programme of music by Sibelius with the Philharmonia Orchestra in the main hall. It was intended to showcase some of the traditional music the composer drew on. Emilia Lajunen is from Suolahti and Eero Grundström from Raumo (both in the Western Finland province in the south west of the country). They formed Juuri & Juuri in 2003 in reaction of what they felt the pop-ification of Folk music returning to late 19th and early 20th-century field recordings. Their instruments inclded the 5-string Fiddle, the Swedish Nyckelharpa and (a German made) portable Harmonium. The musicians are part of several other groups, both of them in a quartet Spontaani Vire, and Lajunen in Suo and Suvi Oskala, and Grundström in Suistamon Sähkö, Sväng and a duo with Maria Kalaniemi.
