Dona Onete was born in Cachoeira do Arari and grew up in Igarapé-Miri, both in the state of Pará in the north east of Brazil. There she was a history teacher and the the Municipal Secretary of Culture. After retiring aged 62 she moved to Belém where a local group overheard her singing in her house and invited her to join them. This led to her first album aged 73 in 2012 and now international tours. Her music draws on the images and the rhythms of Pará State, including the Carimbó dances of the region’s indigenous and Afro-Brazilian people.
