Every Jazzfest includes a celebration of a country other than the USA, and this year it was Cuba. Artists are invited to perform at a special tent (the Cultural Exchange Pavilion), other festival Tents and Stages, and in parades around the Fair Grounds.

Lineup: Dionisio Jesús "Chucho" Valdés Rodríguez (p), Gastón Joya (b/bass g), Rodney Barreto (d), Yaroldy Abreu Robles (congas/bongos), Dreiser Durruthy Bombalé (batás/cowbell/güiro/v).

Chucho Valdés was born in Quivicán, Havana province in 1941, the son of pianist and bandleader Ramón “Bebo” Valdés. In 1973 he founded Irakere, and carries on using this name when performing with larger groups (the other founder members long gone). In recent yearss he performs more frequently solo or with a Quartet or Quintet.
