4th May 2017 at the Fair Grounds Race Course (Cultural Exchange Pavilion), New Orleans, USA.
New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, www.nojazzfest.com/.
Every Jazzfest includes a celebration of a country other than the USA, and this year it was Cuba. Artists are invited to perform at a special tent (the Cultural Exchange Pavilion), other festival Tents and Stages, and in parades around the Fair Grounds.
Country: Cuba. Style: Conga Santiaguera.
Lineup: 3 x campanas (brake drums), 3 x bocúes, 3 x galletas, requinto, corneta china or trombone, 2 x dancers.
Comparsas are large ensembles of musicians, singers and dancers which perform in the street carnivals of Santiago de Cuba and Havana. Los Hoyos is a barrio in Santiago de Cuba and its Conga was founded by 1902. I saw the group twice at the Festival, on stage at the Cultural Exchange Pavilion and parading around the Fair Grounds.
