Every Jazzfest includes a celebration of a country other than the USA, and this year it was Cuba. Artists are invited to perform at a special tent (the Cultural Exchange Pavilion), other festival Tents and Stages, and in parades around the Fair Grounds.
Country: Cuba. Style: Timba.
Lineup: Samuel Formell (d), Vanessa Formell (v), Armando Cantero (v), Roberto Hernandez (v), Abdel Rasalps (v), Yoel Cuesta (congas), Julio Noroña (güiro), Arnaldo Jimenez (b), Efrain Chibas (p), Boris Luna (keyboard), Hugo Morejón (trombone), Alvaro Collado (trombone), Edmundo Pina (trombone), Jorge Leliebre (flute), Pedro Fajardo (violin), Irving Frontela (violin).
Founded in 1969 by Juan Formell, Los Van Van is now led by his son Samuel (very recently his daughter Vanessa also joined the band). Julio Norona is the only original member still in the lineup. Initially their sound was a fusion of son montuno, rumba, and rock. Later funk, disco, hip hop, and salsa were incorporated into what became known as Timba. New instruments such as trombones were also added.
