5th February 2017 at Rossotrudnichestvo in UK, London W8.

Country: Britain & Russia (British resident). Style: Russian Popular Music.

Lineup: Vyvyan John "Bibs" Ekkel (balalaika/garmon/lozhki), Sergey Pushnin (bayan/zhaleyka), Alexei Ekkel (contrabass balalaika) and guest: Daria Kulesh (v/shruti box).

British of Polish descent, Bibs Ekkel has been playing the Balalaika for many decades. He regularly performs in cabaret and at balls. The tunes were a mixture of the ones popular with players of the instrument and songs familair to a Western audience e.g. "Those Were the Days" (originally "Dorogoi dlinnoyu" by Boris Fomin), "Midnight in Moscow" (originally "Podmoskovnye Vechera" by Vasily Solovyov-Sedoi) and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago (by the French composer Maurice Jarre). The concert was interspersed with mimi-lectures about the instrument and comic interludes. The guest singer was Daria Kulesh who I heard with her own band KARA in 2914, see: www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157648446138305/. She did one song on her own, accompanying herself on a Shruti Box.
