18th October 2016 at Cecil Sharp House (Storrow Hall), London NW1.

Country: Canada - Prince Edward Island. Style: Traditional Maritime Provinces & Contemporary Folk.

Lineup: Richard Wood (fiddle), Gordon Belsher (g/v).

Richard Wood was born in Pembrook, Ontario and lived in Gagetown, New Brunswick before moving to Charlottetown, PEI in 1988 aged 10. Already a noted step dancer he soon took up the fiddle. Gordon Belsher was born in Mankota, Saskatchewan and grew up in Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta. He had been a professional musician for several years when in 1978 aged 28, he moved to Guernsey Cove, PEI. The two of them started working together in 1995. I first saw them in 1997 when Wood was 19 at Sidmouth in a trio with Darla Chaisson on piano (one of the last gigs before she left the group), and again as a duo at the Green Note in 2011. Wood is particularly influenced by the Cape Breton tradition, playing here tunes by Winston "Scotty" Fitzgerald and Dan R. MacDonald. Plus others from the wider "celtic" world (by Liz Carroll and Ivan Drever), from Quebec and New Brunswick/the Ottowa Valley in Canada, Galicia, as well as many of his own compositions.
