19th November 2016 at Cadogan Hall, London SW1.

London Jazz Festival, www.londonjazzfestival.org.uk/.

Country: United States (including Portuguese/French resident). Style: Jazz - Modern.

Lineup: David Murray (tenor sax/bass clarinet), Geri Allen (p), Terri Lyne Carrington (d).

This lineup had its first performance at the NYC Winter Jazzfest in January 2015. David Murray (from Oakland, CA and resident in Europe since 1996) played with different guests at a series of concerts. For one of these they were Geri Allen (from Pontiac, MI); and Terri Lyne Carrington (from Medford, MA). They then released an album as the Murray, Allen & Carrington Power Trio, and now (with a slight reordering) are being billed as the MCA Power Trio. I took photos of Allen and Carrington in 2013 as ACS with Esperanza Spalding, see: www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157638237421304/. This is the first time I have taken photos of Murray though I have seen him with an Octet in 2000, the World Saxophone Quartet in 2005 and the Gwo-Ka Masters in 2005 and 2009. As someone who goes to Folk Clubs as well as Jazz Clubs I was intrigued to hear them perform Child ballad 84 (Roud 54), though if I hadn't known it was on their album I probably wouldn't have recognised it. Allen first heard the tune when Charlie Haden incorporated it in bass solos (Haden in turn learnt it and other folk songs from his mother). One reason the Allen took an interest was that it bore the name of her mother, Barbara.
