3rd July 2016 at Queen Mary, University of London, London E1.

“Radical Histories/Histories of Radicalism" conference (the event was a series of talks/workshops but there were a few musical interludes at lunchtime).

Country: Britain. Style: Chartist Hymns.

Lineup: Garth Hewitt (v/g/harmonica) with Michael Sanders (talk).

Garth Hewitt has been performing for 40 years reflecting his interest in Christianity and Justice. Here he played songs from his album “Liberty is Near!”. This is a recording of Chartist hymns from the 1840s which he has put to music. Chartism was a working-class movement for political reform in Britain in the 1830s-50s. Hewitt was joined by Dr Michael Sanders, Senior Lecturer in Victorian Studies at Manchester University, who gave a talk on the Chartists interspersed with performances of the hymns.

“Radical Histories/Histories of Radicalism" conference (the event was a series of talks/workshops but there were a few musical interludes at lunchtime).

Country: Britain. Style: Yiddish Socialist Songs.

Lineup: Includes clarinet, soprano sax, 2 x alto sax, baritone sax, trombone, tuba, melodica, 2 x percussion and chorus.

The London Yiddish Parade is a marching band and Yiddish chorus founded by Vivi Lachs. Its songs include the poems of Morris Winchevsky a Yiddish socialist activist in London in the 1870s-90s. In the past I have taken photos of Lachs at Klezmer in the Park singing with Klezmer Klub and leading the dancing, see: www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/tags/vivilachs/.
In this photo: The Parade began in the People's Palace.
