25th June 2016 at Bishops Square, London E1.

Okinawa Day (annual free festival), www.facebook.com/okinawadayinlondon.

Country: Japan (British resident). Style: Traditional Okinawan.

Lineup: Sanshins, Guitar, Sanba, Rainstick & Shime-daiko/Okinawan Odaiko (and briefly a Shamisen).

Okinawa Prefecture comprises a chain of hundreds of the Ryukyu Islands in the south west of Japan. Traditional Okinawan music is usually accompained by one or more Sanshin (a 3-string lute).Versions of this band date back as far as 1997, with a continual existence (though under different names) since 2001. I took photos of them at the 2011 and 2012 Japan Matsuris, see: www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157627806844256/ and www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157631751158371/. I have also photographed founder member David Hughes with the SOAS Min’yo Group supporting Junko Ueda (www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157656841026066/) and as one of a group of musicians perfrorming songs and dance from Tōhoku supporting the Kimura & Ono Duo (www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157627275735995/).
