2nd June 2016 at Cadogan Hall, London SW1.

Country: Algeria (French resident). Style: Andalusi - Nouba.

Lineup: Beihdja Rahal (v/kouitra), Nadji Hamma (oud), Eyad Guelmaoul (mandolin), Mokrane Boussaid (alto), Hocine Soudani (darbuka).

Beihdja Rahal is from Algiers and has lived in France since 1992. The concert publicity said this was her first concert in London, but I saw her at Union Chapel in 2000. She performs Andalusian Nouba (or Nawba or various other spellings) a musical suite in a single mode or maqam found across the Maghreb. According to tradition there were originally 24 Nouba. She follows the Algiers school which is based on 12 Nouba which date from the 14th century. This evening it was Nouba Rasd Eddil, with a smaller ensemble than her regular one. Her own Kouitra (or Kwitra), plus Oud, Mandolin, Alto (Kamanja or a Violin played in a vertical position against the thigh) and Darbuka. Normally there is a second Oud, second Alto, Qanun and Tar frame drum. On her records there may also be a Ney or Rebab. After the Nouba the second set consisted of more modern ((18th and 19th century) Magrebhin songs.
