13th May 2016 at Royal Festival Hall (Bar level 2), London SE1.

Friday Tonic (free event).

Country: United States. Style: Bluegrass.

Lineup: Frank Rey (v/mandolin), Jim Bunch (banjo/v), Pete Brown (fiddle/v), Dan Stokely (v/g), Patti LaFleur (b/v).

Cedar Hill is a Bluegrass band from the Ozark mountains of Missouri and Arkansas (confusingly there is another band of the same name from Georgia). This area also produced the Dillards and Rhonda Vincent. Frank Rey has been playing in Bluegrass bands since 1964, and was a founder of Cedar Hill in 1967. It disbanded in 1981 and reformed in 2001. Jim Bunch was a member in the 1970s and rejoined about 8 years ago. Pete Brown and Patti LaFleur came on board about 4 years ago, and Dan Stokely is a very recent addition. They play a traditional style of Bluegrass, though mostly their own compositions. There were some old favourites such as "The Prisoner's Song", "My Blue Ridge Mountain Home", "Footprints in the Snow" and "White House Blues".
In this photo: Rey plays a Lloyd Loar 1924 Gibson F5 mandolin.
