9th May 2016 at Kings Place (Hall Two), London N1.

Country: Greece. Style: Traditional music of various countries.

Lineup: Savina Yannatou (v/tambourine), Kostas Vomvolos (kanonaki [quanun]/piano accordion), Kyriakos Gouventas (violin), Haris Lambrakis (nay), Yannis Alexandris (oud/g/tambura), Michalis Siganidis (b), Kostas Theodorou (percussion).

Savina Yannatou was born in Athens and started out performing in the Greek entechno style. She added Sephardic songs, and then traditional music from across the Mediterranean and beyond. Usually giving them her own twist by combiing them with elements of Classical Music and Jazz (she records for the ECM label). In this journey she has been accompanied by the Thessaloniki based band Primavera en Salonico. This concert (and the recent album on which it was based) was billed as songs from Thessaloniki, and given the area's history it included Greek, Turkish, Sephardic, Bulgarian, Armenian, Serbian and Madedonian songs. There was even the Cork city song of the World War One era "Salonika" (the version collected and recorded by Jimmy Crowley) though this is less about those who travelled with the British Army to Gallipoli via the port of Thessaloniki and more about those who remained at home. There were also songs from Galicia, Sardinia and Albania which she admitted had gone beyond her remit. I have seen her and the band three times before: at Med Fest in St Giles Cripplegate in 2002, at Greece in Britain in the Queen Elizabeth Hall in 2004 and at the London Jazz Festival in the same venue in 2006. Also as a guest of La Notte della Taranta at the Barbican in 2011. For photos of the latter see: www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157627184129926/.
