18th February 2016 at SOAS (Brunei Gallery), London WC1.
Part of SOAS Concert Series (free event), www.soas.ac.uk/music/events/concerts/.
Country: Greece. Style: Music from Epirus and other Greek/Balkan music.
Lineup: Yiannis Chaldoupis (clarinet/v), Pavlos Melas (v/g), Nikos Kyrios (v/violin), Theodoris Ziarkas (b), Kostas Kopanaris (cajón/darbuka/davul/frame drum) and guests: Nicki Maher (clarinet), Dania (Dunja) Botic (v), Vangelitsa Giamaiou (v).
Opportunites to see musicians from Epirus are rare (the last one I saw was another clarinet player, Petro-Loukas Chalkias, in 2003). Yiannis Chaldoupis a Roma from Parakalamos was brought to London by Nicki Maher. Most of those joining him on stage were regular or occasional members of the London based band Kourelou (it wasn't the full band as a couple of the regulars were absent). I have seen many of them (Pavlos Melas, Theodoris Ziarkas, Kostas Kopanaris, Nicki Maher and Dunja Botic) before in a variety of lineups (Mavrika, Plastikes Karekles, Çiğdem Aslan, Kalia, Don Kipper, Opaz, and Olcay Bayir/Nee-va).
