4th October 2015 at artsdepot (Café area), London N12.

Sunday Buzz (free regular event).

Country: Brazil & Burkina Faso (British residents). Style: West African & Brazilian.

Lineup: Gaio de Lima (kamale ngoini/pandeiro), Moussa Dembele (v/kamale ngoni/balafon).

This gig was billed as by KoMaGoni, a group formed about a year ago featuring the Kora, Mandolin (Bandolim) and Ngoni played by Kadially Kouyate (Senegal), Gaio de Lima (Brazil). and Sidiki Dembele (Ivory Coast). Problems with availability meant that only Gaio de Lima from Rio de Janeiro was present and he was joined by Moussa Dembele from Bobo-Dioulasso in the southwest of Burkina Faso. The concept of mixing West African and Brazilian music remained (though heavily weighted towards the former). However, instead of exclusively playing string instruments, percussion was also used. Gaio de Lima and Moussa Dembele switched between both of them on Kamale Ngonis (14 and 18 string versions respectively) to Pandeiro and Balafon. I have twice before taken photos of Gaio de Lima, with Umpatacum and the SOAS Kurdish Band (to view click on his name in my tags).
