Junko Ueda was born in Tokyo and since 1988 has based in Europe (Amsterdam and Granada) She peforms the story-telling traditionof Satsuma-Biwa (also the name of the lute used to accompany the vocals) from Satsuma (a domain in the Edo period) now in Kagoshima Prefecture located at the southwest tip of Japan.

Junko Ueda's performance at the City of London Festival mainly consisted of two extracts from the tale of the Heike, which related to the Battle of Dan-no-ura and to the flight of Yoshitsune.

Part of Satsuma 150 (free event), celebrating the 150 anniversary of the arrival in the UK of students from Satsuma.

Country: Japan (Spanish/Dutch resident). Style: Satsuma-Biwa & Classical Music.

Lineup: Junko Ueda (v/satsuma-biwa) with guest:Joe Browning (shakuhachi).

Junko Ueda's peformance at Satsuma 150 saw her repeat the two extracts from the tale of the Heike she sang at the City of London Festival a couple of days before, plus part of "November Steps" by Tôru Takemitsu. For the latter she was joined by Joe Browning.
