12th September 2015 at Queen Elizabeth Hall, London SE1.

Part of Africa Utopia.

Country: Mali. Style: Traditional Mandinka.

Lineup: Kasse Mady Diabate (v). Ballake Sissoko (kora), Makan Badje Tounkara (ngoni), Lansine Kouyate (balafon).

Kasse Mady Diabate was born in Kéla, in western Mali in 1949. In the 1970s he sang with Las Maravillas de Mali (later renamed National Badema du Mali). He then spent a decade in Paris where he resorded two albums for Syllart. Returing to Mali he was part of various collaborations with Toumani Diabate, before forming his own ensemble. I have seen Kasse Mady four times before (in 2004, 2009 and last year and in 2006 with Toumani Diabate's Symmetric Orchestra), but this was the first time I had taken photos.
