11th September 2015 at Royal Festival Hall, London SE1.

Part of Africa Utopia.

Country: Senegal. Style: Afro-Cuban / Senegalese traditions.

Lineup: Alpha Dieng (v), Ndiogou Dieng (v/congas), Rodolphe Clement (Rudy) Gomis (v), Moussa Balla Sidibé (v/timbales), Issa Cissokho (tenor sax), Seydou Norou (Thierno) Koite (alto sax), Yahya Fall (g), Sylvain Ndiaye (g), Charles Antoine (Charlie) Ndiaye (bass g), Mamadou Mountaga Koite (d/congas) and guest: Baaba Maal (v).

Orchestra Baobab fuse Afro-Cuban rhythm, Congolese rumba, Ghanaian highlife and a range of local styles (Wolof, Mandinka, Portuguese Creole from Guinea Bissau). Their first life as a band was 1970-87, but then they reformed in 2001 with most of the original members and became an international success. This was the fifth time I have seen them live (twice in 2001, 2005 and 2009), and there were a few changes to the lineup this time (including the absence of lead guitarist/band leader Barthelemy Attisso, busy in his other job as a lawyer back in Dakar).
