10th June 2015 at Sands Films Studio (cinema), London SE16.

Part of the Tunedin.London series, www.facebook.com/people/TunedIn-London/100004180007047.

Country: Norway. Style: Traditional Sámi (Joik) / Fusion.

Lineup: Torgeir Vassvik (v/g/frame drum), Kari Rønnekleiv (violin), Håkon Mathias Vassvik (frame drum).

The Sámis or Lapps are a Finno-Ugric people. Sápmi (Sámiland) covers the northern parts of Norway, Sweden and Finland, and the Kola Peninsula in Russia. In its traditional form the Sámi singing style, Joik, is unaccompanied. Like the other performers I've seen - Mari Boine and Inga Juuso (with Skáidi) - this group presented Joik to a non-Sámi audience mixed with other styles. Torgeir and Håkon Vassvik come from Gamvik, a village on the coast of Finnmark. It is a place where traditional Sámi culture has largely died out. So Torgeir Vassvik had to reconstructed his own version of the music, adding Rock and Blues (and some Siberian throat singing). They were joined by a Norwegian classical violinist, Kari Rønnekleiv, and were in London to perform a play "Just another Sámi" at Rich Mix.
