31st May 2015 at Electrowerkz, London EC1.
Country: Mali. Style: Traditional Mandinka / Fusion.
Lineup: Bassekou Kouyate (ngoni), Amy Sacko (v), Abou Sissoko (ngoni medium), Moustafa Kouyate (ngoni ba/ngoni), Mamadou Kouyate (ngoni bass), Moctar Kouyate (calabash), Mahamadou Tounkara (yabara/tama).
Bassekou Kouyate was born in Garana near Ségou in south-central Mali, and is from the Bambara people. I first saw him with Ali Farka Touré, before he launced his own band Ngoni Ba. This feature four Ngonis, his lead (soprano), a medium (alto), ba or low (tenor) and bass. I saw them in 2008 and 2010, and the lineup has now completely changed apart from his wife Amy Sacko. It is now a real family affair with his two sons, brother and nephew. It was also much rockier this time (in part due to the two previous times I saw them being at seated venues).
