It has been a while since I saw Tuvan throat singers - the last times were Yat-Kha and Huun Huur Tu in 1999 and 2000. Tuva or the Tyva Republic in the south of Siberia bordering Mongolia. Throat Singing is a varient of the Overtone Singing found in the region, and involves making multiple notes at the same time by manipulating the lips, toungue and larynx. It encompasses many sounds,including a deep noise which has gathered the greatest interest in the west. Alash was formed in 1999, its members were students of the late Kongar-ōl Ondar (the best known throat singer in the west). They now tour the USA and Europe frequently.
