23rd (or rather early hours of 24th) January 2015 at the Royal Concert Hall (Exhibition Hall), Glasgow.
Late Night Sessions, Celtic Connections Festival, www.celticconnections.com/.
Country: United States & Canada - Cape Breton & Ireland. Style: Traditional Cape Breton & other Folk.
Lineup: Otis Tomas (fiddle), Sarah McFadyen (fiddle), Mairi Campbell (fiddle), Joel Sanderson (viola/bodhrán), Abby Newton (cello), Laoise Kelly (harp), Claudine Langille (mandolin), Paul MacDonald (g).
Otis Tomas, originally from Rhode Island, has lived on Cape Breton Island since 1975 - attracted by the local fiddle music. A luthier as well as a musician, 20 years ago he cut down a giant sugar maple on his land. The Fiddletree project consists of musicians from different countries (Canada, United States, Scotland, Ireland) playing Tomas’ compositions on some of the instruments made from the tree. So far there has been a book, two albums and three occasions when the musicians came togther for live performances of the tunes (this one at Celtic Connections was the first away from Cape Breton - I saw the Late Night Sessions reprise rather than the earlier Strathclyde Suite concert). One of the lineup, Mairi Campbell, was hidden away sitting down at the back of the small stage. So for photos of her see her earlier solo Late Night Sessions performance (see: www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157650936459832/). The only member of the lineup I’ve photographed before is Laoise Kelly with both Michelle O’Brien and Kathleen MacInnes (to view click on the lag of her name).
