10th December 2014 at SOAS (Brunei Gallery), London WC1.

Part of SOAS Concert Series (free event).

Country: Britain (including Scotland) & Greece (British resident). Style: Turkish Romani.

Lineup: Nicki Maher (clarinet), Morag Brown (violin), George Tsiaousidis (bass g), Elizabeth Nott (riq/frame drum/darbuka), Kostas Kopanaris (davul/cajón/frame drum/darbuka).

Opaz, founded in 2010, are led by Nicki Maher. They play musical styles preformed by the Romani in Turkey, including ones they adopted from other cultures. One of the band members, Charlie Cawood, was absent (apparently touring with the Mediaeval Baebes). He was replaced by Morag Brown from Edinburgh (who was present on an album they recorded last year). I’ve photographed all of the lineup (except Brown) with other bands: Maher, Tsiaousidis and Kopanaris with Olcay Bayir (both under her name and as Nee-va); Mayer again with Plastikes Karekles; and Nott with Karama, Maya Youssef and Daphna Sadeh (to view click on the tag of a particular musician’s name).
