1st January 2015 at Royal Festival Hall (Clore Ballroom), London SE1.

Part of Winter Festival (free event).

Country: Britain. Style: English Country Dance & other traditional Dance.

Lineup: Thomas Newell (fiddle), George Bell (piano accordion), Sid Goldsmith (g), Mischa Mollov (b), with Adam Taffler, (caller), Lisa Hallgarten (caller).

This group from Hackney were formed in 2012. They promote themselves as having a radical approach to ceilidh. I wondered what this might mean, perhaps a combination of ceididh and hip hop. Rather, judging by this gig, it involved not being too fussy about getting the steps exactly right and an emphasis on having fun. If this is the difference it is a dramatic indictment of the celilidh bands deemed conservative. As well as English Country Dance there were dances from elsewhere, such as Scotland, Cape Breton and Romania.
