16th December 2014 at Barbican, London EC2.
Country: Britain. Style: Traditional English Folk (Christmas Carols).
Lineup: Kate Rusby (v), Damien O'Kane (g/tenor g/tenor banjo), Nick Cooke (melodeon), Aaron Jones (bouzouki/mandolin), Duncan Lyall (b) and guests: Steven Iverson (g), Brass Boys (cornet & flugelhorn & french horn & euphonium & tuba).
Kate Rusby from Barnsley emerged on the folk scene in the 1990s. After brief spells with Equation and the Poozies, she has led her own group. The current version features husband Damien O'Kane from Coleraine in County Londonderry (now living near Barnsley), Nick Cooke from Somerset (now living in Debyshire), Aaron Jones from Poole (now living in Dunfries & Galloway) and Duncan Lyall from Dunblane (now living in Glasgow). The gig was part of her annual “Kate Rusby at Christmas” tour and featured carols, mostly South Yorkshire versions (which as she said were discarded by the Victorians as too merry). She was joined by an electric guitarist Steve Iverson (also from Coleraine) and, now a regular feature of the tours, a Brass Quintet she calls “the Brass Boys”. I’ve previously taken photos of O’Kane with the 2013 version of the Rusby group (minus Kate) and with his own trio in 2011; Cooke with Mawkin; Jones with Ross Ainslie & Jarlath Henderson, with Jeana Leslie & Siobhan Miller and with John Doyle; and Lyall with his own group, with the 2013 group mentioned above, with Ross Ainslie & Jarlath Henderson, with Lorne MacDougall and with the Treacherous Orchestra (to view click on the tag of the musician’s name). Although this was the seventh time I’d seen Rusby perform live, it was the first when I took photos.
