16th November 2014 at Union Chapel, London N1.

London Folk & Roots Festival.

Country: Britain. Style: Traditional English Folk - Sea Shanties & Songs of the Sea.

Lineup: Jon Cleave (v), John McDonnell (v), Jason Nicholas (v/piano accordion), Billy Hawkins (v/g/bouzouki), John Lethbridge (v), Julian Brown (v), John Brown (v), Jeremy Brown (v).

Formed in 1995, Fisherman’s Friends are from Port Isaac in Cornwall (they all grew up within half a mile of the harbour except for John McDonnell from Yorkshireman). Originally 10 strong, Trevor Grills died in an on-stage accident before a show and Pete Rowe didn’t make this trip to London. Amazingly for a shanty crew the group has been a crossover success, with a record deal with Universal Music, television appearances including a commercial. They haven’t changed their music significantly apart from “jazzed up” arrangements to some of the shanties.
