30th October 2014 at Kings Place (Hall One), London N1.

Part of LIFEM 14 (London International Festival of Exploratory Music) Festival: Crossing Cultures.

Country: Mali & Guinea (British resident). Style: Traditional Mandinka.

Lineup: Ami Koïta (v), Papa Gedeon Diarra (v/dance), Fily Kouyaté (v/dance), Mohamed Kouyaté (g), Diali Mory Sissoko (ngoni), Mosi Conde (djembe/kora).

Ami Koita was born in 1952 in Djoliba near Bamako. She joined the National instrumental Ensemble of Mali in 1969, and recorded under her own name since 1976. One of the best known female singers in Mali, she has had little attention in Britain. This was her first visit since 1991, when I saw her at Jackson’s Lane. Visa issues meant she was without some of her regular musicians. Amongst those filling in was Mosi Conde, who was also the support act.
