Ellis Marsalis Jr was born in 1934 in Gert Town. He worked in his father’s motel business, joined the Marines, then became a teacher - first at high schools, then universities. During this time he became involved in the New Orleans modern jazz scene (much less known outside the city than the Traditional one). With Harold Battiste, Alvin Batiste and Ed Blackwell, he was involved in 1956 in making some of the first Modern Jazz recordings in the city. He is probably best known as a mentor/educator. Four of his six sons (Wynton, Branford, Delfeayo and Jason) have become professional musicians. Amongst his students were Terence Blanchard, Donald Harrison, Nicholas Payton and Harry Connick Jr.

Branford Marsalis is one of four sons of Ellis Marsalis who became professional musicians. He moved away from New Orleans to New York, and now lives in Durham, NC. He has led a quartet with a similar lineup since the mid 1990s - the only recent change being Justin Faulkner replacing Jeff “Tain” Watts.
