18th October 2014 at Barbican, London EC2.
Country: India (US resident). Style: Hindustani instrumental/contemporary.
Lineup: Zakir Hussain (tabla), Rakesh Chaurasia (bansuri), Sabir Khan (sarangi), Vijay Chauhan [Chavan] (dholki), Deepak Bhatt (dhol), Abbos Kosimov (doyra).
Zakir Hussain (born in Mumbai) is the son as Alla Rakha. He has performed both Hindustani classical music and been part of a variety of fusion projects (I’ve seen him with John McLaughlin as Remember Shakti, and with Bela Fleck). For several years he has toured under the name “Masters of Percussion”, with a rotating lineup of percussionists (and players of other instruments). This time the band included a musician from outside India - the frame drum player Abbos Kosimov from Uzbekistan. The evening consisted of a series of duos with each of the guests (who also had their own solo spot), before everyone came together for the final piece.
