2nd August 2014 at Queen Elizabeth Hall (Roof Garden). London SE1.

“Folk with Altitude”, organised by the Nest Collective, thenestcollective.co.uk/.

Country: Italy. Style: Southern Italian Traditional Folk - Tarantella & Pizzica.

Lineup: Mauro Durante (violin/tamburello/v), Emanuele Licci (g/bouzouki/v), Maria Mazzotta (v/ tamburello/castanets), Giancarlo Paglialunga (v/ tamburello), Giulio Bianco (recorders/zampogne/ciaramella/harmonica/bass g), Massimiliano Morabito (diatonic accordion), Silvia Perrone (dancer).

Salento is the Southern part of Puglia ((roughly south of a line from Taranto to Brindisi). Some residents speak a dialect Griko which is related to Greek. The local music includes songs in Griko (Musica Grika), and also Pizzica. This has been described as a Salintine form of Taranatella (or alternatively as a local way of dancing Tarantella). Among the groups which have played a key role in propogating the music of Salento are Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino, formed in 1975. The original members included the mother and father of Mauro Durante (Daniele Durante and Rossella Pinta) and the father of Emanuele Licci (Roberto Licci). Leadership of the group passed from Danile to Mauro in 2007. He totally changed the CGS’s lineup, keeping only himself and Maria Mazzotta. Amongst the new members was Emanuele, who has a spell in the group in his teens. I have previously seen members of the lineup when the festival La Notte della Taranta came to London in 2011 (for photos see: www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157627184129926/) and when another Salentino group Ghetonia visited in 2004 and 2005.
