2nd July 2014 at Barbican, London EC2.

Country: United States - New Orleans. Style: Jazz - Modern.

Lineup: Wynton Marsalis (trumpet), Ryan Kisor (trumpet), Marcus Printup (trumpet), Kenny Rampton (trumpet), Walter Blanding (tenor sax/clarinet), Victor Goines (tenor sax/flute/clarinet /bass clarinet), Sherman Irby (alto sax/flute/clarinet), Ted Nash (alto sax/flute), Paul Nedzela (baritone sax/clarinet), Chris Crenshaw (trombone), Vincent Gardner (trombone), Elliot Mason (trombone), Dan Nimmer (p), Carlos Henriquez (b), Ali Jackson (d) and guests: Nathaniel Facey (alto sax), Lewis Wright (vibraphone).

Wynton Marsalis is the best known of four brothers from New Orleans who (along with their father) became professional musicians. He moved away from New Orleans to NYC to study at Juilliard and continues to reside there. He is the Artistic Director of the JLCO, a big band founded in 1988. The Orchestra covers a variety of different Jazz styles, and often gives themed performances. This time it was at its most Modern, with the theme being "Best of Blue Note Records" - featuring tunes from some of the classic albums (mostly from the 1950s) on the label. On its trips to the UK it sometimes adds local musicians. For this gig it was Nathaniel Facey and Lewis Wright (both wearing their sharpest suits, essential; to pass muster with Marsalis). I’ve taken photos of them with British lineups (to view click on the tags of their names).
