12th June 2014 at the Nehru Centre, London W1.
“Remembering Begum Akhtar” (free event).
Country: India. Style: Ghazal.
Lineup: Radhika Chopra (v), Rekesh Chauhan (harmonium), Bobby Jutley (tabla).
Dr Radhika Chopra is from Jammu in the far north of India. This concert was a tribute to Begum Akhtar (1914-74) and consisted of a selection of pieces associated with her - Ghazal (a form of sung poetry found across the Middle East and South Asia), and also Dadra and Thumri (two semi-classical styles). I took photos of Harmonium player Chauhan on keyboards with his own group at the London Mela in 2011, see: www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157627643568358/.
