Sun Ra first led a band, the Sonny Blount Orchestra, in Alabama in the 1930s. Moving north to Chicago, he was a band leader again from around 1954. Within a couple of years he had adopted a new name (after using variants like Le Sonyr Ra) and was calling the band the Arkestra. He carried on until departed the planet in 1993. However the Arkestra has continued to perform. Many of those with long memberships under Sun Ra (e.g. Pat Patrick, John Gilmore, Ronnie Boykins) have died. However the majority of the band joined during the Sun Ra era. Marshall Allen and Charles Davis go back to the 1950s, Danny Ray Thompson the 1960s, and Knoel Scott and Vincent Chauncey the 1970s. Marshall Allen (who had his 90th birthday earlier this year) has been the band leader since 1995. The Arkestra continues to play Sun Ra’s weird mixture of styles - from Swing to Free Jazz to Funk. Then of course there are the space chants.
