11th May 2014 at the Rich Mix, London E1.

Part of “Making Tracks” series.

Country: India. Style: Hindustani Fusion.

Lineup: Debashish Bhattacharya (hindustani slide g), Subhasis Bhattacharya (tabla), Anandi Bhattacharya (v/percussion), Nishad Pandey (g), Sam Bass (bass g), Antoine Morineau (percussion).

Debashish Bhattacharya is from Kolkata and born into a family of musicians. He has invented a number of versions of the Hindustani slide guitars - the 22-string Chaturangui, the 14-string Gandharvi, and the 4-string slide Ukulele the Anandi. For many years he has collaborated with his brother on tabla. More recently he has been joined by his daughter on vocals. I’ve previously seen Bhattacharya playing conventional Hindustani instrumental music. This project is a Fusion one, based on the recent album “Beyond the Ragasphere” which combines ragas with European and South American styles. The band put together for the tour included his guitar pupil based in Kolkata, a British bassist (a one time member of 3 Mustaphas 3) and an Iranian (and French resident) percussionist.
