23rd October 2013 at the 100 Club, London W1.

Country: United States. Style: Blues Rock.

Lineup: Luther Dickinson (v/g/d/bass g), Lightnin' Malcolm (bass g/d/g), Cody Dickinson (d/keyboard/washboard/g).

Luther and younger brother Cody are the sons of sons of record producer Jim Dickinson. They were born in West Tennessee, before moving to the Mississippi Hill Country (which is Tate and Marshall counties, the area bordering Tennessee). Formed in 1996 the North Mississippi Allstars set out in Luther’s words “to get across an acoustic-guitar country blues aesthetic in a rock setting”, or more precisely ”to play Fred McDowell” as a “loud, electric power-trio”. I last saw them in London in 2004 and 2005 when the band included Chris Chew on bass (and on the first occasion expanded to a quartet with Duwayne Burnside on guitar). In recent years they have only performed in the UK as a duo, but this time they had added Lightnin' Malcolm.
