17th October 2013 at the Blackheath Newbridge WMC, London SE3.

Cajun Barn, www.cajunbarn.co.uk/.

Country: United States - Louisiana. Style: Cajun.

Lineup: Steve Riley (v/accordion/fiddle/g), Kevin Wimmer (v/fiddle), Chris Stafford (v/g/accordion).

This occasional band came together in 2006 to give musicians already playing in groups such as the Mamou Playboys, Balfa Toujours, Feufollet, Beausoleil and the Red Stick Ramblers an opportunity to play the traditional Cajun of an earlier era (Racines means roots). I saw them at Jazzfest in 2007. This slimed down version of the group lacked bassist/fiddler Mitch Reed and drummer Glen Fields. I’ve taken photos of Rliey and Wimmer with the Mamou Playboys (www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157626608040877/), Riley with Lil Band O’ Gold (www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157626858611340/), and Stafford with Feufollet (www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157626950261268/ and www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157627167248549/) and Cedric Watson (www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157626823431580/). The band switched between two formats - accordion, fiddle and guitar (and here for a few songs Riley and Stafford exchanged instruments) and (invoking an earlier form of Cajun) twin fiddles and guitar.
